Baccarat

If you’ve grown slightly fatigued by the roulettes, blackjacks and three-card pokers of this world and want to try something a little different, then live baccarat could be the game for you. The game can appear complicated on first impression, but once you get your head around the rules it is, in fact, a very simple game to sink your teeth into and enjoy.

The game of baccarat is around 600 years old and originates over in Italy, where Felix Falguiere wanted to create a high-end game for rich punters in Italian gambling establishments. The game was originally titled “baccara” as it’s the Italian for “zero” (which will make a bit more sense as you dive into the rest of our live baccarat overview), but over time, casinos and players have adopted the French spelling of “Baccarat”.

But anyway, let’s take a look at the ins and outs of live baccarat and why it’s such a popular game across the world.

How to play live Baccarat

The overall objective of live baccarat is very straightforward. There are two players, the “player” hand and the “banker” hand. Each of these hands receives two cards and the aim of the game is to correctly predict which pair of cards, when combined, have the closest value to 9. All playing cards have the same value as the number displayed on them, but picture cards such as kings and queens have a value of 0, while an ace has a value of one. So, let’s say, for example, you have a 3 of clubs and a 5 of spades. This would give you an overall 8, which is as close as you can get to a 9 without actually hitting it bang-on.

However, you could also find yourself in a situation where your combination adds up to more than nine. Let’s say you get a six of diamonds and a 7 of hearts. This, of course, brings a total of 13, but what you do here is subtract 10 from the total, giving you a final figure of 3.

Finally, there is the additional possibility of hands receiving a third card, and the conditions in which this happens varies from house to house, so you should always read up on the house rules before jumping into a game so you know where you stand.

As far as payouts are concerned, your typical payout is even-money for correctly predicting which hand wins, but you may be subject to commission payments on some hands on some variations of live baccarat, so again, make sure you’re fully clued up on an individual game’s house rules on payouts and commissions.

Betting strategies

Because all of your betting on live baccarat takes place before the hand commences, the only real strategies available to players is in the amount you wager, depending on your success and failure in previous hands. One such example is the 1-3-2-4 wagering plan that sees players adjust their stake from 1 unit up to 3, 2 and 4 units respectively, if they continue to win. This gives players the chance to boost their profit and capitalise on hot streaks of wins, while negating the impact of losing hands.

It would also be a good idea for players to keep an eye out for the “form” of wins, and this is usually displayed as a large table in the bottom corner of the screen. Usually, games will display data from the last 50-100 hands, showing the winning player, as well as the value of that winning hand. Then, using what you know about probability in table games, you can use this to your advantage by placing bets on outcomes that are the most likely to come in over the course of thousands of games at that probability.

For example, you notice that six of the last eight rounds have seen the banker win. Now, knowing that (discounting ties) banker wins typically come in 50% of the time rather than 75%, you would be more inclined to place bets on the player hand winning next, and using a Martingale staking strategy, you can bet knowing that, mathematically, your hand should be a winner within the next handful of games.
