The visuals in Funky Chicken are good, harmless fun. The background to the reels is a glorious sunrise on the farm, presumably accompanied by the crows of the funky chicken, where a field of ripe corn is watched over by a smiling scarecrow. The symbols themselves are a little less bucolic, and while the low-value symbols are just multicoloured versions of the standard 9 – A, the high-value symbols include an angry, gun-toting farmer and a tractor gone haywire. It’s not high art, but the theme is amusing and well designed with cartoonish graphics, though the lack of game-specific sound effects is a little disappointing. Not even a rooster’s squawk!
There’s also not much to write home about in the main game’s mechanics, where you’ll find the standard three rows and five reels with 25 paylines to play on. However, things do get more interesting when it comes to the payouts because you can expect to walk away with a whopping 5,000x your stake if you land five of the Scarecrow wild. The second most valuable symbol also pays out 1,000x your stake for five, so there are plenty of decent shots at the big time in this game. With maximum bets of £/$/€62.50 possible, that can quickly add up to a whole lot of cash, which explains the overall average RTP of 95%.
These generous payouts aren’t the only good thing about this game, because there is also a bonus to help you fill up your prize kitty. It’s not the most thrilling of bonus rounds, featuring a simple 15 free spins should you manage to land three of the funky chicken scatters, but it’s nice to be able to re-activate this feature from within the spins as much as you like. It’s also pretty easy to activate these spins because there’s no requirement for the three scatters to be aligned, they just need to appear anywhere on the reels at the same time.
