History of Blackjack

Blackjack, or twenty-one, is a staple casino game played worldwide. It goes by many names. With its popularity spurring after 300 years of play, people can find it at casinos in their hometowns and ones across the globe.

Blackjack has become a favourite online casino game, with its popularity growing year on year. The simplicity and speed that blackjack offers make it an attractive game for players looking for entertainment with value on both sides – not just big-time gamblers but the common player just looking for a simple casino game to enjoy.

The origin of blackjack is a hotly debated topic, with many historians believing that it was created in French Casinos during the early 1700s. At this time, cards were called “Vingt-et-Un”, which translates to twenty-one, and these playing cards may have been derived from Chemin de Fer – baccarat being hugely popular at the time.

Modern Blackjack

If you were to walk into any reputable casino, the first thing you would see is likely a bunch of blackjack tables. Online casinos are just like their brick-and-mortar counterparts; they’ve got tons of different blackjack games! Some of these include Atlantic City Blackjack, 3D Blackjack and the popular Atlantic City Blackjack!

If you’re going to play blackjack in a casino, make sure to know the proper etiquette. When played with multiple decks it’s common for croupiers to use Blackjack Shoe so they don’t have to hold all of the cards themselves. There is also a blank plastic card inserted towards the bottom of the shoe telling them when it is time to reshuffle.

How to Play Blackjack

The game is simple. You wager and the croupier deals two cards to each player and the dealer. When dealing with the two cards to themselves, the dealer will leave one card face down. Your goal is to beat the dealer, to do this you must get as close to 21 without going over; that’s called busting. The car values are as follows:

  • Ace (11 or 1)*
  • King (10)
  • Queen (10)
  • Jack (10)
  • 10
  • 9
  • 8
  • 7
  • 6
  • 5
  • 4
  • 3
  • 2

* In blackjack, the Ace can be high or low depending on which card is drawn with it. For example, if you have Ace, 5 and Queen, Ace’s value will be 1, giving you a hand of 16. However, if the Ace is dealt with a 10, its value will be 11, giving you a hand of 21 (Blackjack).

In blackjack, you can hit, stand, split or double down, here’s how they all work:

  • Hit – The dealer gives you one additional card.
  • Stand – You are not dealt any other cards, and stick with your hand.
  • Double Down – You place down another wager doubling your bet and are dealt one additional card.
  • Split – This action can only be played if you are dealt two cards of the same value*. The cards are split, and you place a bet on the other ‘hand’, essentially playing two hands.

* These can be a pair (e.g. 2&2, 7&7) or cards of the same value as any card with the value of 10 (e.g. K&Q, 10&J).

Once each player has chosen to either stick (stand), or bust, the croupier, then deals out all of the cards for their hand. The hand is over when either the player or the house wins.

Players can draw with the dealer also; this is called a push. When this happens, players are given their stake back.

Payouts for blackjack are 1/1 or Evens. If you place a £5 bet, you will win £5 and get your stake back, leaving you with £10. However, if you are dealt a blackjack, and it beats the dealer’s hand, you are paid out 3/2. If you bet £5 and flop blackjack, you will have your £5 stake returned to you, and you will be paid £7.50 in winnings.
