Merlin is back (although, I don’t know where he went in the first place) with Play N Go’s Rise of Merlin slot game.
But does the wizard pack enough of a punch in the bonus and gameplay departments to make it a standout slot? Let’s get stuck into the Rise of Merlin slot game review and find out more.
Players are transported to the deepest depths of the ocean (pretty ironic, considering the title of the game) and on to a 5×3 playboard that is packed with fairly standard playing card values alongside some nicely rendered game-specific characters, such as dragons, owls, and Merlin himself, who looks exactly how you imagined him to.
A quick dive into the playing ranges sees a $€£0.10 minimum bet, moving all the way up to a $€£100 max bet if you’re so inclined.
The Returns To Player (RTP) rate remains as important as ever and Rise of Merlin comes in at just above 96.5%, which should put players’ minds at ease. That said, the game does have a slightly higher volatility than the industry average, which shouldn’t scare players away but is something to keep in mind if you find yourself waiting that little bit longer between wins.
The small wins on Rise of Merlin are relatively easy to come by, with players just needing to line up three adjacent matching symbols on one of the game’s ten paylines. The smallest payouts are reserved for matching playing card values, such as ‘10s’ ‘Js’ and ‘Qs’, moving all the way up to whopping 5000 and 1600x multipliers for landing multiple Merlins and dragons respectively.
It’s fair to say that I’ve been spoilt when it comes to visuals over the years and have reviewed some of the most visually breathtaking games on the market. Because of that, our standards are particularly high when aesthetics are concerned, and while Rise of Merlin comfortably slots into the “nice” category and is pleasing on the eye, it doesn’t quite have enough extra flashes of detail to put it in the upper echelons of slot games visually. That said, the looks are supported by an epic soundtrack that pulls you into the action and keeps you firmly engaged.
Rise of Merlin’s purple crystal ball represents both the scatter and wild symbols. Landing five of them in one spin also acts as a 5000x multiplier in regular gameplay, but landing just three triggers a free spins round. But aside from that, there isn’t too much else to speak of on the bonus front, which is pretty disappointing.

Rise of Merlin is a very solid slot game in all departments. The concept itself is very nicely thought out and brought together, while the visuals and general gameplay are steady 7 out of 10s. However, there isn’t anything in the game that takes it from a Mr Consistent to a Star Performer, and that may prevent it from becoming a mainstay in some player’s slotting schedules.
